Pedestrian Killed in Reston Accident

| May 22, 2018 | Pedestrian Accidents |

Shortly before noon on Monday, May 21st, a woman was crossing the street at the intersection of Reston Parkway and Bluemont Way in Reston when she was struck by a passing car. The collision, which is still in the process of being investigated, has resulted in the Fairfax County Police Tweeting to alert drivers about the high possibility for significant delays in the area while the crash is investigated and the area secured. At the time of this writing, much of the information regarding the details of the incident is still unknown, although the few statements given so far by the Fairfax County Police do shed a small sliver of light on the issue.

The incident took place at a major Reston intersection, very close to the popular Reston Town Center. It was around 11:30 in the morning, while many people in nearby offices were either starting to take or preparing to take their lunch, when a pedestrian left the sidewalk and began to cross the intersection. Reports did not indicate if the woman on foot was using a crosswalk or if she had started crossing the street at an area away from the designated pedestrian space. The Reports also failed to state whether or not the woman had the right of way or if, perhaps, she was simply assuming that the surrounding traffic would notice her and stop.

Regardless of the specific details, it is apparent that as the woman was crossing the road a car that has yet to be described turned into the area where the pedestrian was walking and struck her. The force of the collision violently knocked the pedestrian off of the car and onto the pavement. Either a witness to the crash or the driver of the vehicle called the police, and emergency response crews rushed to the scene and began to offer assistance to the gravely injured woman.

It is not clear if the pedestrian was alive when the paramedics accessed the scene, but the report did state that she died as a result of the wounds she suffered in the initial collision with the car.

No charges have yet been filed in the case and the driver of the car remained at the scene and continues to cooperate with the police’s investigative efforts.
