Garbage Truck Overturns in Alexandria

Police with the Fairfax County Police Department in Alexandria were on hand this past Thursday afternoon (April 12th) to assist with the initial investigation and cleanup of a crash that involved a garbage truck working in Alexandria. The reports from the area did not include speculation or information regarding the specific reasons behind the crash, although it is believed that there were no vehicles involved other than the one truck and that the driver of the truck was taken to the hospital after the incident.

We know from the Fairfax County Police report that the crash took place along the 4600 block of Eisenhower Avenue and that it resulted in the garbage truck overturning and coming to rest on its side. It is not clear if the truck collided with something, if the driver lost control, or if the truck perhaps tipped over when a corner was taken too tightly.

A picture uploaded to the Alexandria Police Department's official Twitter page shows the white Mack garbage truck on its side just after having passed through an Alexandria intersection. The rear end of the garbage truck is lying on the sidewalk, but the front end is resting on the road. Around the front of the truck are scattered bits of plastic and glass, likely pieces of the truck that fell off when it crashed to the ground.

Paramedics arrived with the police and the driver of the dump truck was taken to a nearby hospital. It is not clear if they were able to free themselves from the truck or if emergency assistance was required to extricate them from the vehicle.

The injuries suffered by the driver were not believed to be life-threatening, but the report failed to state whether or not they were serious or only minor injuries. A non life-threatening injury can still result in numerous debilitating effects for those involved, and it is important to remember that just because someone survives a crash does not mean that their life will simply return to normal.

At the time of this writing, Fairfax County Police have not offered any speculation regarding the reasons behind the incident. The crash is still under investigation, and additional reports from the FCP are likely forthcoming.
