Tree Collapses on Car in Fairfax County During Wind Storm

Firefighters, paramedics, and police officers were some of the many members of various Fairfax County rescue crews to rush to the scene of an incident involving a car and a tree in Vienna on Friday, March 2nd. The official report from the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue says that a call came in at close to 9:30 in the morning that claimed a tree had fallen onto a car at the intersection of Maple Avenue East and Branch Road South East. When the rescue crews arrived at the scene of the incident, they found themselves needing to free an injured and trapped individual from a car that was lying crushed underneath a large tree.

Throughout the day on Friday, and all during the preceding night, extremely high winds and powerful gusts ravaged many states along the eastern seaboard. Fairfax County, although not the most affected by the adverse weather, certainly suffered its share of inclement conditions. Throughout the county, numerous municipally sponsored services were postponed or cancelled while authorities attempted to prevent as much damage and injury as possible. It is believed that the collision between the tree and the car in Vienna was a direct result of the aggressive winds, as there were no other vehicles caught up in the accident.

Although the specific details on the accident itself are not currently available, it seems that the car was either stopped at the intersection or just passing through when the tree collapsed on top of it. The emergency crews were able to cut the tree apart, reach into the car, and pull its sole occupant to safety. The car's driver was then treated at the scene for minor wounds and transported to a nearby hospital; although this last piece was done primarily as a precaution and it is not believed that the individual suffered from any life-threatening injuries.

It is not known if an investigation into the incident will be conducted, or if the officials are treating this circumstance as an unfortunate result of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Of possible interest to any future investigations into this particular accident would be whether or not the tree in question should have been pulled down prior to the storm.
