Critical Injuries after Car Crashes into Potomac River

| Jun 25, 2018 | Auto Accidents |

Members of the Arlington County Fire Department responded to an incident that happened in Arlington on Friday, June 22nd, and resulted in at least one person being rushed to the hospital in serious condition. What we know comes from Tweets from the official Arlington County Fire Department Twitter account as well as small items featured in local news releases. These two sources of information combine to paint a picture of the incident that is nearly complete.

It was sometime during Friday morning when a white or silver sedan traveling down an unnamed roadway close to the Pentagon departed from the asphalt, crashed through a barrier, and drove into the Potomac River. This incident took place right by the Columbia Island Marina, and a picture from the scene of the incident shows part of the top and trunk of the car poking up from the water near several docks and moored boats.

We do not currently know what caused the driver of the vehicle to crash into the water. It is likely that police and other investigators will wait until the crash victim becomes stabilized before subjecting them to any questions or tests that might help shed light on the incident.

Reports stated that no other person or persons appeared to be in the vehicle at the time of the incident, and that the one person inside of the car was able to be pulled from the sinking vehicle without too much difficulty. The reports did not clarify whether or not the injuries sustained by the person were due to the impact of the car against the surface of the water or if they came about due to some other reason. It is possible, for instance, that the driver experienced some sort of medical emergency in the moments before the crash took place, which would indicate that the severity of his condition is not completely relegated to the crash itself.

No other cars were involved in the crash, and all of the boats at the Columbia Island Marina appeared to be in ship shape at the time of this writing.
