A drunk driver caused a chain-reaction of crashes that took place on the Capital Beltway around 3 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day. The events caused multiple injuries, sending a total of six people to Inova Fairfax Hospital, some with life-threatening injuries.
Police received a report of a Nissan Leaf traveling southbound in the northbound lanes. Literally seconds after that report came in, the Nissan and a BMW SUV collided head-on. The impact sent debris flying across the freeway, causing danger to other drivers. Three other vehicles reported damage from the debris. As the parties involved in that collision got out of their vehicles and were standing nearby, a Honda Civic in the northbound lanes struck their vehicles.
The occupants who had stepped out of the BMW SUV sustained life threatening injuries in that collision, and were sent to the hospital. The driver of the Nissan, after striking the BMW, went off the roadway and into the guardrail. He sustained injuries, though not life-threatening. He was charged with driving under the influence.
After such a large accident with multiple serious injuries, DUI will likely not be the only charge this driver will receive. He will also be subject to multiple personal injury, or even wrongful death lawsuits if any of the injured parties become deceased. If you or someone you know has been involved in an accident caused by a drunk driver, consult with an experienced attorney to discuss your legal options. No one should have to suffer physically, emotionally, or financially due to the negligence or recklessness of another driver.
