On Sunday, September 16th, a 28-year-old was driving a 1997 Mercedes along Lee Chapel Road, close to Onion Patch Drive, when something happened to cause them to lose control of their car. According to police officers speaking on behalf of the Fairfax County Police Department, it was close to 9:30 in the evening when this and the following events took place.
The driver of the Mercedes, who was named in the initial report, was coming from an undisclosed location, but the authorities in charge of the investigation have reason to believe that wherever this location was the person consumed a significant amount of alcohol while there. Subsequently, as they were driving down Lee Chapel Road, the individual behind the wheel of the Mercedes was intoxicated.
It was when they reached the top of a small hill that the driver of the Mercedes lost control of their car. As a result, the vehicle crossed out of one lane, over the double yellow line, and into the lane going in the opposite direction. In this lane already was a car being driven by a woman from Burke. With the woman in her car was her dog.
The Mercedes struck the other car head-on, causing immense damage to both vehicles as well as the individuals and the dog inside of them. Emergency services rushed to respond to the incident and not long after the crash itself happened there were paramedics, EMTs and other first responders attending to the gravely wounded inside of the cars.
Paramedics rushed the woman from Burke to an area hospital. She was admitted with life-threatening injuries, and at the time of this writing it is not clear if she survived the crash or if she is still in treatment. Her dog was taken to an emergency vet, but the injuries they sustained in the accident were too severe and the dog died while in the care of the medical facility.
The driver of the Mercedes was also transported to a nearby hospital, although the extent of his injuries was not immediately clear. We do know that he was arrested on a DWI after arriving at the hospital and that further charges are pending the results of certain lab tests.
