Two Injured on Beltway After Tractor Trailer Accident in Prince George's County

On Thursday August 23rd, drivers attempting to travel along the inner loop of the Beltway in Prince George's County experienced extreme delays after a severe collision between a box truck and a tractor trailer resulted in large amounts of debris spread across the roadway and numerous serious injuries. The facts relating to the incident are currently foggy, but it seems that the incident happened close to both Allentown Road and Interstate 95 and that it was located close to a site where ongoing construction had resulted in altered traffic flows.

While a detailed dissemination of the events has yet to take place, we do know several of the more important facts that are linked to the case. Pictorial evidence suggests that the incident was the result of a rear-end collision between the box truck and the slightly larger tractor trailer. It is not clear if the tractor trailer was in the roadway at the time or if it had perhaps been pulled off to the shoulder in order for the driver to check something with the truck.

It appears that the box truck approached the back of the tractor trailer at sometime before 9:00 in the morning and struck the rear of the trailer with extreme force. The pictures show the box truck pressed hard against the trailer, the front of the truck almost totally crushed.

At least two individuals were traveling in the box truck's cab at the time, and the reports state that these two people were both trapped in the vehicle after the collision. Emergency teams were able to extricate the two without too much difficulty, but both of them suffered from injuries as a result of the incident. One person, likely one of those from the box truck, was described as suffering from critical injuries. Medical personnel initially planned on shutting down a much larger stretch of the Beltway in order to use a Medevac helicopter to take the person to a hospital, but it was ultimately decided to simply use an ambulance to transport the injured individual.

It is not clear if the second person from the box truck was also hospitalized and it is further not clear if the driver of the tractor trailer suffered from any injuries in the incident.
