One Dead, One Injured after Hit-and-Run on Woodrow Wilson Bridge

On Wednesday, August 1st, police working for the Maryland State Police Department responded to reports of an incident that happened along the Woodrow Wilson Bridge, a large structure that stretches across the Potomac River from Alexandria, Virginia, to Oxon Hill, Maryland. The auto accident on Wednesday happened in the northbound lanes of I-495 and involved a car that had pulled off of the road and onto the shoulder after it began experiencing issues on the roadway.

According to the official report, two individuals were inside of this car shortly before 11:00 at night when the car began to display problematic behavior. The driver then pulled the vehicle off to the side of the road. It is not known if either or both of the people inside of this car then exited the vehicle, but it was around this time that a Nissan Pathfinder being driven by an unnamed individual approached the area.

Witnesses to the crash told police investigators that the driver of the Pathfinder was driving down the northbound lanes when they swerved out of the travel lane and onto the shoulder, struck both individuals from the disabled vehicle, and then returned to the roadway and fled from the scene. Apparently, the driver of this car did not make it very far, and the Pathfinder was discovered near to the area, although the driver had since exited the vehicle and left on foot, abandoning the car.

A 21-year-old Washington D.C. resident was one of the individuals struck by the Pathfinder, and they were declared dead at the scene of the incident. A 20-year-old was also badly injured, and they were rushed to Inova Fairfax Hospital for treatment. At the time of this writing, their condition is not known.

Police told reporters that they had apprehended a suspect and brought them in to the station for official questioning. It is not clear if the police believe the suspect to be the person who was driving the Pathfinder, and no charges have yet been officially filed in regards to the situation. Police are still compiling evidence and are strongly encouraging anyone who witnessed the crash to contact them with information.
