Rear-End Crash on I-95 in Fairfax County Kills One

By MacDowell Law Group, P.C. on July 30, 2018

Police with the Fairfax County Police Department responded on Saturday, July 28th, to early morning calls of a collision along Interstate 95, close to the Springfield Interchange. Reports from the police indicate that the emergency call came in around 1:15 in the morning. It is not clear if the call was placed by one of the people involved in the incident or if it was a witness to the crash who contacted the emergency response crews.

When the police, paramedics, and other rescue personnel arrived at the specified location, they found that two cars had been involved in a forceful collision. One of the cars had overturned as a result of the crash and the other had caught fire. Rescue personnel also indicated that one of the people involved suffered fatal injuries and was declared dead at the scene.

Reconstruction efforts indicate that the incident involved two people: a 25-year-old from Springfield driving a 2004 Toyota Camry and a 26-year-old from Jessup, Maryland, driving a 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander. The Camry was traveling behind the Outlander when, for reasons that are currently under investigation, it failed to regulate its speed or change lanes when the Outlander was traveling at a lower rate of speed. The Camry then struck the Outlander which caused the driver of the Outlander to lose control of their car.

The Outlander then flipped over at least one time before coming to a stop. The Camry, although all four wheels remained on the ground, caught fire as a result of the crash.

Emergency response crews rushed to the area and began to administer emergency medical care to the people involved. It is believed that this consisted of the two drivers of the cars as well as two passengers inside of the Camry. Despite the fact that she was wearing a seatbelt, the driver of the Outlander suffered from critical injuries in the collision and following rollover of her car. Emergency crews were not able to save her and she was declared dead at the scene.

The two passengers in the Camry were transported to Inova Fairfax Hospital where they were treated for non life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Camry was not injured at all.
