Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Pull Trapped Driver from Floodwaters

Floodwaters that began rising throughout Thursday night in Tysons resulted in dangerous road conditions for drivers attempting to navigate a morning commute through certain low-lying areas. While the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department did put out a warning regarding the water (and also included a safety video on their blog to alert motorists to the situation as well as offer advice on what to do if you are inside of a car when it becomes trapped in a flood), the message still failed to prevent a motorist from becoming adrift in the unexpectedly damp rush hour.

The report from the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue indicates that it was at the intersection of Old Courthouse Road and Besley Road that the incident occurred around 7:30 in the morning. It is not known how the authorities were alerted to the plight of the motorist, but it seems that the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department was able to arrive within a short period of time and offer assistance to the trapped person before the scenario became grave.

It did not take much time for the rescue teams to reach the trapped person, who is believed to have been alone in the car at the time when they became stuck in the deep water, and pull them to safety. The report did not indicate whether or not the car itself was towed and how much damage, if any, the car is believed to be suffering.

The person rescued, who was not named or described in the report, did not suffer from any immediately noticeable injuries, and it is believed that they were able to continue on with their day after the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue team pulled them from the water.

The flooding is thought to have stemmed from the overflow of several smaller rivers and streams throughout the center of Fairfax County. In an attempt to curb the number of emergency rescues from floating cars, several intersections in Fairfax County (including the intersection between Old Courthouse Road and Besley Road) were closed. It is not clear if the Fairfax Fire and Rescue Department had closed this intersection before the incident described above or if this incident prompted the closure.
